Curry, Janel M. and Paul Hanstedt, eds. 2014.  Reading Hong Kong, Reading Ourselves. Hong Kong: City University of Hong Kong Press.

This book, written by fourteen reflective scholars about living and learning from Hong Kong, builds on the growing interest of using “place” as text while providing a model of deepening cross-cultural encounters, from initial impressions to deeper understanding.  The book explores Hong Kong through the lenses of a range of disciplines that shaped individual author's perceptions and encounters.

Bowman, Greg, and Janel M. Curry-Roper.  1982.  The Houma People of Louisiana: A Story of Indian Survival.  Houma, Louisiana: United Houma Nation, 1982.

This book tells the story of the Houma people, a federally unrecognized tribe, in the lower reaches of the Mississippi delta in Louisiana.  Declared extinct in official documents in the 1850s, their story is one of a hidden and forgotten people who have survived on the edge of the Gulf of Mexico.

Intercultural and International Perspectives

We live in a diverse and globally connected world. To ensure the flourishing of humans and nature together in communities across the world requires intercultural skills and international perspectives. Almost any problem or situation in the present day, entails both the need to be able to communicate across differences, and to understand the differing cultural and societal contexts.

As a professional geographer, I am trained to integrate knowledge—economic, social, environmental, and cultural—to understand places and regions. I have deepened my understanding through living and working abroad and working in many different cultural settings, including the gift of three Fulbright Fellowship. My skills around intercultural dialogue have also been enhanced through formal training in mediation and conflict resolution.  My colleagues from around the world have profoundly shaped the way I see the world and have been a precious gift to me and my family.

Below is information on some my leadership positions, initiatives, and publications related to my global and cross-cultural experiences.
